Hello! So, I just got finished with The Texas Author Con and Book Festival! It was great! I learned a lot, and I hope that I will be invited back next year. I got lucky because I was on the waitlist, and someone had dropped out so I was able to attend.
I want to share with you what I’ve learned over the past year since the launch of my first traditionally published novel.
First, start posting on a social media platform. TikTok/BookTok, Instagram/Bookstagram, Facebook/Authors of Facebook, YouTube/BookTube, and X/Writing Community are all apps that are a good way to get yourself out there. Then you start posting. Yes, you, start posting. Preferably every day. Whether it’s about your writing, what you’re reading, or what you’re doing that day. IT GETS YOUR NAME OUT THERE! And after a while, it gets easy, and it becomes second nature.
Second, you start researching. Find places where you can go to book events and book signing. Yes, I know this is what an Agent or Publicist is supposed to do, but if you’re like me, you are the agent and publicist, doing all the work yourself. Your future self will thank you later when your book starts to take off.
Once you have signed up for a couple of small events, then you go to bookstores. Preferably in person. Yes, person. I know that’s the sucky part, but again, you’re getting yourself out there. So, if you want to do a book event with a bookshop then they will want to see you in person.
I know it’s a lot, but I promise you it does get easier the more you do it.
These are a few things that I have learned. Take it or leave it, and until next time, happy writing!
